The Wilcoxon family name appears to have originated in England. The custom was for the son of Wilcox to be Wilcoxson. Eventually the son would become Wilcox and his son would be Wilcoxson. Spelling varied in all writing until the 1800's so various spellings of names exist. The most common old spelling seems to be Wilcockson.
There are three main groups of Wilcoxon families in the USA, with some transantlantic connections undocumented:
- William Wilcoxon of Connecticut ca 1635.
- John Willcoxen of Maryland ca 1700.
- John Wilcoxon of PA/NC/KY ca 1742.
